Thunder Dragons are extremely territorial and voracious. They will assist good creatures if their need is genuine. They often take the form of kindly old men when associating with people.
The size of a Thunder Dragon's scales increases to become large thick, and as strong as metal. The scales vary in color from an iridescent sea blue to a deep, almost abysal black, retaining a glossy finish through only the first half of the dragon's stages. This makes Thunder Dragons very hard to spot in their mountainous or sky surroundings. However, the dragons often conceal themselves, burrowing into the clouds of storms so only part of their heads are exposed.
Thunder Dragons love to soar in the hot sun's rays; but usually flying in the night time when temperatures are lowest and easier to conceal them. Some Thunder Dragons nearly match the color of the night sky and use this coloration to their advantage in combat.
Thunder Dragons speak their own tongue, a tongue common to all Chaotic dragons, and 12% of hatchling Thunder Dragons have an ability to communicate with any intelligent creature. The chance to possess this ability increases 5% per age category of the dragon.
Combat: Thunder Dragons prefer to fight from a distance so their opponents can clearly witness the full force of their breath weapon and so little or no threat is posed to themselves. Often Thunder Dragons will attack from directly above or directly from the sun's rays. Older Thunder Dragons will use their special abilities, such as lightening storms, in concert with these tactics to mask the airs and aid in their chances to surprise. Thunder Dragons will only run from a fight if they are severely damaged, since they view retreat as cowardly.
Breath weapon/special abilities: A Thunder Dragon's breath weapon is a 5' wide bolt of lightning that streaks 100' in a straight line from the dragon's mouth. All creatures caught in this stream must save vs. breath weapon for half damage. Thunder Dragons cast spells and use their magical abilities at 4th level, adjusted by their combat modifier.
Thunder Dragons are born with an immunity to electricity. As they age, they gain the following additional powers: Young: create or destroy water three times per day. Juvenile: sound imitation at will. Adult: Thunder storm once a day. Old: tornado/hurricane once a day. Venerable: Heal once a day and detect gems three times a day
Habit/Society: Thunder Dragons prefer aerial lairs on secluded mountain peaks, or amid the clouds themselves. When they lair in clouds there always will be an enchanted area with a sold floor for laying eggs and storing treasure they are fond of gems-especially sapphires. They spend hours looking out over their domains, watching for trespassers and admiring their property. Most of the Thunder Dragons encountered will be alone because they do not want to share their territories with others. However, when a family is encountered the male dragon will attack ferociously, protecting his property-his mate and young. The female dragon also will join in the attack if the threat proves significant.
Thunder dragons' enemies are men, who kill the dragons for their skin and treasure, and Silver Dragon, Gold Dragon, Magic Dragon, Shadow Dragon. If a thunder dragon discovers another dragon in the same region, it will not rest until the trespassing dragon is killed or driven away.
Ecology: Thunder Dragons are able to consume nearly anything, however, they are particularly fond of herd animals, such as mountain goats, which they cook with a lightning bolt, and thunder clouds.
