Abyssal Dragon
Physical Appearance: The worst dragon man or beast can come across, Abyssal Dragons are among the rarest dragons ever seen for many reasons. Among the top of these are that they have been butchered almost into extinction. Corrupted from the powerful backlash of energy generated from the death of Maedhros’s avatar, Abyssal Dragons appear as large black dragons with runes runs etched into their skin. They walk on 4 powerful muscular legs that end in wickedly sharp claws perfect for skewing prey with a long whip like tail. On their backs sit the traditional powerful bat like wings, but these wings, like their bodies, are covered in scales that are practically like thousands of dull daggers. These dragons were once known to shred entire infantry divisions simply by pouncing on them and shaking. They are about 60 feet with their tail, and around 40 feet without it.
Relations: Abyssal Dragons are not known to suffer humans, elves, or anything else for that matter. Even followers of Maedhros seeking their power have been crushed beneath them without mercy. They have no allegiances to anyone by their very nature, and no dragon rider has ever saddled one before. It is said the only pact an Abyssal Dragon honors is that honored within death. However it has happened once where a drow raiding party obtained the help of an Abyssal Dragon to annihilate a small band of Alderon paladins patrolling the Waste? Those Drow were killed immediately afterwards. They are known to also take slaves however, but such slaves have notoriously short lives. It is even whispered that these dragons have formed entire tribes of orcs that they have willingly lead to a hopeless battle, just to enjoy the slaughter. Extremely hard to deal with.
Lands: Only a few handfuls still exist as they are no longer born, due to the decrease in their natural food source that resulted in their creation; though it is said sects of the followers of Maedhros try to create them artificially by finding dragon eggs or young dragons that have yet to eat their element. Unfortunately, followers of Maedhors are their traditional food when they are young as they can siphon the divine energies from the bodies of the dead priest. When older, they seem to posses the ability to devour any living thing to obtain nutrition. This is actually done through the devouring of the souls of their targets, or at least this is what theory suggests. No one has ever gotten to find out first hand…and live to tell the tale at least.
Behavior: Abyssal Dragons are insane. Their entire mentality is geared towards that of isolation and destruction. However they also have a desire to obtain power. Usually they have a superiority complex that no species could ever hope to match, making them very difficult to deal with unless Alderon paladins, knights, or clergymen are around. In this case, they appear to be able to work with others as long as the revenge is obtained for their slaughter at the hands of the church. It is actually quite instinctual for them to attack priest of nearly every god; though they seem to attack everything that moves and thinks eventually.
Having been known to construct small empires of enslaved tribes, they are always seeking treasure; this trait having them at odds with red dragons who posses the same greed and pride. Wars between the red and Abyssal dragons have been song in tales of horror that usually end in victory for the side of justice…though this rarely happens in real life.
Language: Dragons use telepathy to communicate, and therefore have no need for the tongues of mortal races.
Morality: Well, you can imagine they are about as moral as the god to which they owe their existence. Completely immoral, they may their own rules in deals and do what helps them. Beware of any deal struck with an Abyss Dragon.
Deities: Maedhros. They are perhaps the only creatures close to Maedhros actual thinking. They don’t like or love their god however. They just recognize that he is powerful and to be feared. No worship is paid to him and no prayers are uttered when in danger. This is why the Cabal see them as a tool of the dark lord to weed out the unworthy and rain punishment down upon heathens.

This breath isn’t 100% lethal, but surviving it is like having a piece of your life sucked away; though this does not shorten a person’s life. This functions like a polymorph spell that wizards use, reverting them into the form of a humanoid creature at which point they actually gain all the physical traits associated with that race. Many have used this ability to pose as humans in order to through off pursuers, but their evil taint always remains in this form; causing them to appear slightly darker than normal.
