Gem of the Phantom Steed (Rich Blue Diamond) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the gem user creates a quasi-real, horselike creature. The steed can be ridden only by the gem user who created it. A phantom steed has a black head and body, gray mane and tail, and smoke-colored, insubstantial hooves that make no sound. Its eyes are milky-colored. It does not fight, but all normal animals shun it and only monstrous ones will attack. The mount has an Armor Class of 2 and 22 hit points. If it loses all of its hit points, the phantom steed disappears. A phantom steed moves at a movement rate of 48. It has what seems to be a saddle and a bit and bridle. It can bear its rider's weight, plus up to 150 pounds. These mounts have the following powers: The ability to pass over sandy, muddy, or even swampy ground without difficulty. The ability to pass over water as if it were firm, dry ground. The ability to travel in the air as if it were firm land, so chasms and the like can be crossed without benefit of a bridge. Note, however, that the mount cannot casually take off and fly; the movement must be between points of similar altitude. The ability to perform as if it were a pegasus; it flies at a rate of 48 per round upon command. The phantom steed's duration is fifteen hours.

Gem of Photocopy (Serpentine) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the enchantment allows the gem-user to create a permanent image, on a piece of parchment, canvas, or the like, of whatever he sees and concentrates upon at the time of activation, to the range of his vision. Detail in the final picture depends on distance, field of vision, and level of the gem-user. For every level of the gem-user, he may choose that the final image will appear on the parchment as if he were ten yards closer to the subject; e.g.., the picture created by a 5th-level character standing sixty yards away from a creature could contain detail he would normally notice at a distance of ten yards.

Gem of Plane Source (Snowflake Obsidian) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the enchantment reveals the plane of origin of any one creature, object or magical phenomenon in spell range, or the plane reachable by the closest gate or dimensional nexus point. Hostile or unwilling creatures save versus spell to avoid their origins being divined. The enchantments range is 75 yards.

Gem of Plant Growth (Chrysoberyl) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the gem-user causes normal vegetation to grow, entwine, and entangle to form a thicket or jungle that creatures must hack or force a way through at a movement rate of 1 per round (or 2 if the creatures are larger than man size). The area must contain brush and trees for this gem's enchantment to work. Briars, bushes, creepers, lianas, roots, saplings, thistles, thorn, trees, vines, and weeds become thick and overgrown so as to form a barrier. The area of effect is 14,400 square feet. This area can be arranged in any square or rectangular shape that the gem-user desires. Individual plant girth and height is generally affected less than thickness of brush, branch, and undergrowth. The gem's effects persist in the area until it is cleared by labor, fire, or such magical means as a dispel magic spell. The gem's range is 120 yards. There is no saving throw.

Gem of Protection from Enchantment (Lapis Lazuli) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the gem-user is partially immune to magical forms of sleep, charm, and fear. He automatically receives a saving throw even if one is not ordinarily permitted, and if one is permitted, he saves at +4. Note that this enchantment will not free the gem-user from any enchantment already in force, nor will it protect him from natural drowsiness or feminine guile, for example. Also note that protection extends only to actual charm spells, such as charm person or charm monster, not to enchantment/charm spells as a class.

Gem of Protection From Evil (Yellow Diamond) When this gem is activated, it creates a magical barrier around the holder at a distance of 1 foot. The barrier moves with the holder and has three major effects: First, all attacks made by evil (or evilly enchanted) creatures against the protected creature suffer -2 penalties to attack rolls; any saving throws caused by such attacks are made with +2 bonuses. Second, any attempt to possess (as by a magic jar attack) or to exercise mental control over (as by a vampire's charm ability) the protected creature is blocked by this gem. Note that the protection does not prevent a vampire's charm itself, but it does prevent the exercise of mental control through the barrier. Likewise, a possessing life force is merely kept out. It would not be expelled if in place before the protection is activated. Third, the gem prevents bodily contact by creatures of an extraplanar or conjured nature (such as aerial servants, elementals, imps, invisible stalkers, salamanders, water weirds, xorn, and others). This causes the natural (body) weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil, if such attacks require touching the protected being. Animals or monsters summoned or conjured by spells or similar magic are likewise hedged from the character. This protection ends if the protected character makes a melee attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature.

Gem of Protection From Evil, 10' Radius (Crimson Coral) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the gem creates a globe of protection, identical in all respects to a protection from evil spell, except that it encompasses a much larger area and its duration is greater. The effect is centered on and moves with the gem user. Any protected creature within the circle can break the warding against enchanted or summoned monsters by meleeing them. The area of effect is a 10-foot radius globe. The duration is 3 turns.

Gem of Protection from Housework (Brown Jasper) Although the name of this magical item may seem strange, its use is common throughout the lands - particularly those of the gentry or nobility. When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the enchantment prevents air-borne dust from settling on surfaces and keep common spores and molds from growing within the area of effect, essentially eliminating the need to perform everyday dusting and cleaning. This spell does not, however, clean up dirt and muck that is accidentally or deliberately brought into the area, thus it is wise to prevent muddy children or recently returned adventurers into the protected area. The enchantment's area of effect is one ten-foot by ten-foot per level room. The duration is thirty days.

Gem of Protection from Magic (Peridot) When the command word for this gem is spoken, the gem's enchantment invokes a very powerful, invisible globe of anti-magic in a 5-foot radius from the gem-user. No form of magic can pass into or out of it, but physical things are not restricted by the globe. As with other protections, the globe of anti-magic moves with its invoker. The protection lasts for 5d6 rounds.

Gem of Protection From Normal Missiles (Golden Topaz) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the gem user gains total invulnerability to hurled and projected missiles such as arrows, axes, bolts, javelins, small stones, and spears. Furthermore, it causes a reduction of 1 from each die of damage (but no die inflicts less than 1 point of damage) inflicted by large or magical missiles, such as ballista missiles, catapult stones, hurled boulders, and magical arrows, bolts, javelins, etc. Note, however, that this magical gem does not convey any protection from such magical attacks as fireballs, lightning bolts, or magic missiles. The duration is 15 turns.

Gem of Protection from Plants (Tomb Jade) When the command word for this gem is spoken, a protective sphere 10 feet in diameter is centered on the gem-user. All forms of vegetable life (including fungi, slimes, molds, and the like) are unable to penetrate the sphere. If it is moved toward plant life that is capable of movement, the plant will be pushed away. If the plant is immobile (a well-rooted shrub, bush, or tree, for instance), the sphere cannot be moved through or past it unless the gem-user has enough strength and mass to uproot the plant under normal conditions. The protection lasts for 1d4+4 turns.

Gem of Protection from Undead (Rhodolite) When the command word is spoken, this gem creates a 5-foot radius circle of protection that extends from, and moves with, the gem-user. It protects everyone within it from all physical attacks made by undead (ghasts, ghosts, ghouls, shadows, skeletons, spectres, wights, wraiths, vampires, zombies, etc.) but not magical spells or other attack forms. If a creature leaves the protected area, it is subject to physical attack. The protection restrains up to 35 Hit Dice/levels of undead; excess Hit Dice/levels can pass through the circle. It remains in effect for 10d8 rounds.

Gem of Quimby's Enchanting Gourmet (Hematite) This magical stone summons forth a specialized version of the unseen servant developed with one particular task in mind-cooking and cleaning in the kitchen while its summoner is otherwise occupied. The enchanting gourmet is a magical force under the control of the summoner. It can perform simple kitchen actions like cooking, stirring, carrying, measuring, cutting, washing dishes, drying dishes, and minding the fire. It is no stronger than an unseen servant and no more dexterous than its summoner. The enchanting gourmet can be left to cook a meal that the summoner himself has prepared at some point in his life. If something disrupts the smooth flow of the meal (such as the arrival of a dragon or an explosion in the kitchen), the enchanting gourmet will seek the advice of its summoner. The enchanting gourmet can be dispelled by the summoner at will, by a dispel magic spell, or by taking 6 points of damage from area of effect attacks such as breath weapons, explosions, and the like. The enchanting gourmet cannot be used to brew potions and other magical drinks, but has been used to generate simple poisons and in one case serve as a bartender. The creator of this spell, Quimby of Procampur, was an impatient cook but a lover of fine food in quantity.

Gem of Refresh (Mynteer) When the command word for this magical stone is spoken, the enchantment has an initial effect exactly like that of the 1st-level spell clean (q.v.). In addition, refresh keeps the recipient in that condition for the full duration of the enchantment, eighteen days. Thus, any dirt or odor would simply not find a hold upon the gem-user. One could survive downpours of rain, wading through mud, and walk through a sand storm with one's clothes clean, skin fragrant, and hair in place (after a pass or two of the comb). The enchantment also prevents the recipient from contracting any of the common non-magical contagious diseases, keeps wounds from infecting, and blocks the sun's ultraviolet rays.
